Funded through the Chief Scientist’s Office, Health Innovation South East Scotland (HISES) forms part of national network created to deliver the Scottish Government’s vision to utilise the innovation process to deliver a healthier and wealthier nation for the future.
Formed through a collaboration of three NHS Boards — Borders, Fife and Lothian, with the latter taking on the role of lead host Board, HISES has a pivotal role in delivering innovative solutions to the health and social challenges, both regionally and nationally. Need to contact us? Get in touch

Outcome of the funding call for Scottish-led rapid research in COVID-19
A programme of 55 COVID-19 projects have been recommended for funding as result of the Chief Scientist Office Rapid Research in COVID-19 (RARC-19) funding call. The outcome of the call is a programme of projects meeting the aim of establishing a broad Scottish programme of high quality research on COVID-19 that will delivered rapidly and inform policy and clinical practice on responding to the current pandemic. Funding secured for 2 projects in the South East region
Congratulations to Lucy Johnston, Research Fellow at Edinburgh Napier University for securing CSO funding for 2 projects, building on the existing research carried out in care homes in the East Region test bed. Project 1 – Online debriefings with care home staff after a resident’s death: improving coping mechanisms, team cohesion and communication with relatives. Project 2 – Avoiding burn out of care home workforce: sharing national learning and local initiatives that support resilience and retention during the Covid-19 pandemic. COVID-19 Response from R&D
Colleagues in NHS Lothian R&D have been focused on everything COVID-19 – having deployed over 60% of their Clinical Research Nurses to the front line to assist in the pandemic. The Emergency Medicine Research Group of Edinburgh (EMERGE) is a long established research team that is currently concentrating on COVID-19 research activity. Miranda Odam (EMERGE Research Manager) has a leadership role in deploying clinical research staff to deliver Lothian’s COVID19 research portfolio. The EMERGE website showcases important research that is taking place across NHS Lothian, including key COVID19 projects https://www.emergeresearch.org/. As part of the response to COVID19, patients can participate in an important clinical trial called RECOVERY. This is supported and funded by the UK government, and is being rapidly set-up across UK hospitals. It is now active in NHS Lothian. Head to the RECOVERY website to read more or volunteer via your medical team to participate if you have been infected with COVID-19.

Covid-19 Response Funding Calls

Supporting the NHS Response to Corona Virus, SHIL
Looking for innovative solutions in response to the COVID-19 crisis. Ideas can range from the simple to the complex. A medical device, a piece of technology, software or service offering. It may be an idea to support diagnostics, home care, hygiene or mental health. Anything to improve patient care and the fight against COVID-19 will be considered.

Covid-19 Response, CivTech
One feature in the current climate is the huge number of offers of help the Scottish Government has received from the private sector. To make the most of these opportunities, CivTech is focusing on taking urgent problems for which there are no ready and easily accessed solutions, and quickly developing answers which can be deployed in short order.

Barclays Healthtech Response, Barclay’s, The University of Edinburgh, UCL and CodeBase
The partnership focus on ways that existing tech solutions can address the isolation of the vulnerable, reduce noncritical demand into the NHS and aid diagnostics and treatment. Looking for innovations that can slow the spread of COVID-19, enable home-based care, support the wellbeing and morale of NHS staff, and assist those who are most vulnerable and in self-isolation.

Travel and subsistence funding to support low and middle-income countries engagement during the COVID-19
The awards will provide travel and subsistence funding to appropriately qualified public health professionals, clinicians and academics who wish to offer science and technical advice to support the immediate response to COVID-19 in low and middle-income countries.
