New Digital CT_Guided Biopsy Pilot Launched in Lothian
On 26th November 2024, HISES launched a pilot project with Pogo Digital Healthcare in determining the usage of digital technology in relation to patients who are referred to have a CT_Guided Biopsy when there is a suspected lung cancer diagnosis. The aim of the project is to improve information sharing and communication between patients and clinicians, to improve patient experiences and mitigate the risk of late cancellations or procedures that need to be abandoned. Over the six-month pilot, the project team will evaluate its effectiveness in supporting patient decision making, and its impact on clinical time and costs associated with the process of scheduling biopsy procedures as well as assessing the engagement of a digital solution to underpin a new lung cancer pathway. The Clinical Lead for the project is Dr Rishi Ramaesh, Consultant Radiologist, NHS Lothian & NHS Fife, and NHS Scotland Innovation Fellow.

In the month of August, NHS laboratory specimens were delivered by drone for first time during live flight trials between the Edinburgh BioQuarter next to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and Borders General Hospital in Melrose. These trials are part of Project CAELUS, a national innovation project aiming to test the use of drones as a way of delivering vital medical supplies, including essential medicines, blood, samples, and other crucial healthcare items throughout Scotland.

The Scottish Ambulance Service (SAS) has carried out vital research with members of the public to test how drones can be used in cardiac arrests. SAS, a key partner in Project CAELUS, did the study in late July to better understand the feasibility of delivering an Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) via drone technology. It explored the protocols required to support call handlers in navigating bystanders to a drone during simulated scenarios of Out of Hospital Cardiac (OHCA) arrests. During each simulated OHCA scenario, a group of participants were given instructions through telephone compared to another group of participants were given video assisted guidance to retrieve a nearby drone-delivered AED. This study is building on existing research domestically and internationally, to better understand how drones could be used by an Ambulance Service in the future.

HISES and NHS Lothian have been working with FLOK over the past year on pilot test case studies.

A new digital pathway aimed at supporting stroke survivors launched on 18th June 2024 in NHS Lothian. The pathway will be using the digital platform and app ‘Tailored Talks’, created by Pogo Digital Healthcare, to provide tailored support and information to people recovering from a stroke. As an integrated care pathway, the Tailored Talks system links patients to third sector support from Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland, where the Advice Line team can offer patients a call-back for further guidance. The pathway is an example of how industry, NHS and third sector parties can collaborate to improve healthcare and support patient self-management.
