Funded through the Chief Scientist’s Office, Health Innovation South East Scotland (HISES) forms part of national network created to deliver the Scottish Government’s vision to utilise the innovation process to deliver a healthier and wealthier nation for the future.

Formed through a collaboration of three NHS Boards — Borders, Fife and Lothian, with the latter taking on the role of lead host Board, HISES has a pivotal role in delivering innovative solutions to the health and social challenges, both regionally and nationally. Need to contact us?

2022 Gilead Oncology Fellowship Programme – Applications Open

Gilead UK and Ireland are now accepting applications for the 2022 Gilead Oncology Fellowship Programme. The Fellowship Programme is a medical grants funding stream that funds innovative initiatives that improve patient care and outcomes across oncology services. Priority will be given to those projects that include patients with breast cancer, though applicants are encouraged to submit projects for other types of solid tumour.

Applications are particularly welcome for any project that seeks to reduce inequalities in access to healthcare and outcomes. Applications close on Saturday 30th July 2022.

Scotland’s Innovation-led Future: Accelerating the Health and Social Care of Tomorrow

Register now to attend this national innovation event (virtually or in-person), which will take place 10am – 2pm on Thursday, 7th July 2022 at Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh. The event, Chaired by Mark Cook, Scotland’s Lead Industrialist in Life Sciences, examines the following themes:

  • AI validation and delivery in health and care settings – safe innovation and commercialisation
  • Medicines – novel industrialisation and introduction of innovative medicines in NHS Scotland
  • Transformation in chronic disease and Long-Term Conditions – a global view of what Scotland can achieve in 2022
  • Investment Opportunities in Scotland for Life Sciences

There will also be an opportunity to meet with consortia to discuss Open Innovation Challenges. This is your chance to meet the Clinicians, share ideas, speak to Investors and agree collaborations for 2022/23.

vCreate Neurology Test of Change Pilot – Applications Open

Applications are now being welcomed for test of change pilots of the vCreate system from services across Scotland allied to neurology. vCreate is an NHS-Trusted secure video messaging service that helps patients, families and clinical teams stay connected throughout their care journey.

University of Dundee Innovation Support Available

The University of Dundee work with companies, large and small, to help them tap into the support, funds, and expertise available to them to allow them to develop their ideas and innovate their ambitions. They have lots of opportunities for organisations to work together with the university on different projects within different sectors across Scotland and the UK.

How Heriot-Watt’s Manufacturing Centre will support Scottish SMEs

The first-of-its-kind facility in Scotland hopes to bring together both engineers and scientists, working alongside clinicians, to assist Scotland’s medical device SMEs. Heriot-Watt’s Medical Device Manufacturing Centre (MDMC) will give SMEs the chance to develop the next generation of MedTech devices in Scotland, free of charge.

This presents a big step in helping Scottish SMEs realise their ambitions for developing the future of medical devices.

The Digital Innovation Hub for Home Hospitalisation

The Digital Innovation Hub for Home Hospitalisation has been established to help promote knowledge sharing, collaboration, and innovation.

Initially developed to support innovation for patients suffering long term heart conditions, the Innovation Hub will be expanded to encompass other conditions such as COPD and Diabetes and link with other Health Innovation Hubs in Europe to provide network specifically designed to promote innovation and collaboration for all aspects of “Home Hospitalisation”.

NHS Scotland Assure Research and Innovation Service Fund Launch Event

Edinburgh Napier University are administering a £1.55M research and innovation fund on behalf of NHS Scotland Assure. The research service’s remit is to achieve a coordinated portfolio, supporting the development of evidence-based guidance, to deliver safe healthcare environments that are free from avoidable risk.

An online Launch Event will take place 10am – 1pm on Friday 24th June 2022. You will hear guest speakers talk about NHS Scotland Assure, the fund, what type of projects will be funded and how to apply.

DDE Venture Builder Incubator 3.0 Applications

The Venture Builder Incubator is a 4-month programme which provides a framework of skills and knowledge required to validate the commercial potential of data-driven ideas.

The Venture Builder Incubator is a curated programme of interactive, online workshops and events designed to provide PhD students and academics with the skills and knowledge to exploit the commercial potential of their research.

It offers the opportunity to be at the heart of a vibrant community and to develop life-long professional and entrepreneurial skills.

Deadline for applications is Friday 25th June 2022.

The Science Faculty at the University of Strathclyde are offering a free online Upskilling module in Statistics for NHS Staff. This module is for health care professionals with a desire to enhance their knowledge of statistics and data analysis. This course is worth 10 credits at SCQF Level 7.

Women’s and Children’s Innovation Challenges – Call for 2022 proposals

The Scottish Health Industry Partnership (SHIP) have announced they are funding Open Innovation Challenges in Women’s and Children’s Health. Selected challenges will ​support industry partners to work with clinical teams to develop innovative solutions to key clinical priorities.

Proposals for Challenges are now ​invited from clinical teams ​or consortia across Scotland, with successful proposals set to be advertised to prospective industry partners later in the year. A total of £500k is available for industry partners to co-develop new (pre-commercial) solutions with clinical project teams. Closing date for Expressions of Interest is Thursday 30th June 5pm, 2022.

Pandemic Science Hub at Edinburgh bioQuarter

A new multi-million-pound University of Edinburgh research programme to develop treatments for lung infections, such as Covid-19 and future pandemics, has been made possible with support from a significant donation by Baillie Gifford.

The Pandemic Science Hub will combine Edinburgh’s world-class ability to determine a person’s genetic predisposition to lung injury with advanced interventional robotics for drug delivery, cutting-edge sensing and sampling technologies, and innovative clinical trial design.

Less than one week until the 2022 NHS Scotland Event!

Registration is still open for the 2022 NHS Scotland Event, which will take place Tuesday 21st June and Wednesday 22nd June at the P&J Live in Aberdeen. On Monday 20th June delegates are invited to attend our very first Experience Day.

The NHS Scotland Event, in partnership with NHS Grampian, have created several exciting visits for delegates looking to find out more about the incredible and innovative work that is going on across NHS Grampian and beyond.

Usher Institute Development Taking Shape

The construction of the structural steel frame of the Usher Institute was followed by the installation of composite concrete upper floors started in March then reinforced concrete ground floor slab and drainage outfall connections.

This new build facility on BioQuarter is a key component of the Data-Driven Innovation Initiative programme, co-funded by the City Region Deal and The University of Edinburgh, to deliver a world class research facility where academics and commercial partners can work collaboratively to drive research and innovation within healthcare and life sciences.

CivTech Challenge 7.6

The Scottish Government is focused on tackling inequalities including embedding inclusive communication within Government and across the public sector. This Challenge will work with public bodies and people with lived experience of barriers to accessing public services, such telephone based services.

The challenge potentially concerns a wide range of public services, with a focus on health and social care in the first instance. One of the use cases could be NHS 24, but that is not exclusive.
