Funded through the Chief Scientist’s Office, Health Innovation South East Scotland (HISES) forms part of national network created to deliver the Scottish Government’s vision to utilise the innovation process to deliver a healthier and wealthier nation for the future.

Formed through a collaboration of three NHS Boards — Borders, Fife and Lothian, with the latter taking on the role of lead host Board, HISES has a pivotal role in delivering innovative solutions to the health and social challenges, both regionally and nationally. Need to contact us?

HISES Innovation Event 2023

On the 8th June 2023, HISES hosted a virtual Innovation Event. This event gave an update on nationally driven and locally initiated innovation activity across the South East Regional Test Bed. It included presentations from staff, academia and industry partners involved in a range of these innovation projects, including those being led by NHS staff who have joined the national Innovation Fellows / Scholarship programmes.

Funding to bring down outpatient waiting list

The Digital Dermatology programme is one of the first innovations to be approved for national rollout through the Accelerated National Innovation Adoption (ANIA) pathway. It will help to speed up treatment and reduce waiting lists. This system will begin rolling out to the first Territorial Boards in early 2024 and then adopted across Scotland.

CfSD Project Manager Job Opportunities

The recently approved Value Case for the new Digital Dermatology Referral & Triage Pathway included the recruitment of a national implementation team which will lead and coordinate the delivery of this programme. Project Manager roles will provide the post holder(s) with a unique opportunity to manage the delivery of a high-profile Dermatology project at a national level as part of the Centre for Sustainable Delivery (CfSD). The closing date for applications is 21st June 2023.

Scotland's National Innovation Strategy published

Innovation is a key tool to make Scotland a fairer, more equal, wealthier, and greener country. The Scottish Government have published an ambitious ten-year strategy to make Scotland one of the most innovative small countries in the world. Health and Life Sciences is featured as one of the main innovation priority areas. Within the breadth of specialisms represented in Scotland’s Health and Life Sciences sector, several highly innovative vertical sector-specific opportunities within health innovation have been identified as having significant growth potential:

  • Future Medicines Manufacturing

Pregnancy and Perinatal Innovation Call

InnoScot Health is seeking forward-thinking pregnancy and perinatal care innovations that can help support NHS Scotland to improve women’s health. It’s an important area with vast opportunities to improve the outcomes of maternity and neonatal care for all women, babies, and families and place more focus on mental health and inequalities, we are encouraging NHS Scotland’s diverse workforce to come up with new ideas that achieve improved outcomes in this area. The package of support for health and social care staff with ideas to support NHS Scotland includes up to £25,000 of initial funding, regulatory support, project management and the innovation expertise of InnoScot Health.

Intellectual Property: Protecting your Innovative Idea Webinar

Protecting the Intellectual Property (IP) rights of the NHS represents one of the cornerstones of InnoScot Health’s service offering and why the organisation was initially set up. This online session will take place 12 – 12.45pm on Wednesday 21st June 2023 and will be a fantastic opportunity to learn what IP truly means, its importance in healthcare, and why it’s so crucial for innovators to protect their novel ideas early.

Digital Health and Care Leadership Programme Applications Open

Applications are now open for cohort 21 of the Digital Health and Care Leadership Programme (DLP), supporting Scotland’s Digital Health and Care Strategy to develop the skills required to influence the use of digital in health and care delivery. Applications are welcome from employees from all health and care settings in Scotland including health, social work, social care, social work, housing, charities and the third sector. The DLP is fully funded by Scottish Government, there is no charge to organisations or participants. Application Deadline is Monday 17th July at midnight.

Scotland's Health Research and Innovation Conference – Save the Date

In celebration of the 50-year anniversary of the Chief Scientist Office (CSO), NHS Research Scotland are jointly hosting a national conference with the CSO on Tuesday 31st October 2023, at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital campus in Glasgow. The conference titled – 50 years of advancing healthcare – will bring together researchers, innovators, healthcare staff, policymakers, industry, and the public. It will celebrate five decades of health research and innovation and explore how we work together to transform future healthcare.

Menopause Innovation Challenge coming soon

Within the Women’s & Children’s Health Innovation portfolio, a Menopause challenge is being launched in partnership with CivTech. The challenge will focus on how technology can improve the experience of menopause for all women and ensure they can access the information and care they need, when they need it. Join us in Edinburgh for CivTech’s 8th Demo Day on Tuesday 27th June 2023 which will see the launch of the next set of Challenges.

Cell and Gene Therapy Catapult opens new space on Edinburgh BioQuarter

The Cell and Gene Therapy Catapult (CGT Catapult), an independent innovation and technology organisation specialising in the advancement of cell and gene therapies, has officially opened its facility on Edinburgh BioQuarter, its first site in Scotland. Edinburgh has become a world-leading hub for stem cell research, and this new space, located in the University of Edinburgh’s Institute of Regeneration and Repair, will build on and support the region’s academic strength.

i4i Addiction Mission: Innovation for Treatment and Recovery Awards

Applications are open for the NIHR Addiction Mission: Innovation for Treatment and Recovery (AMI) Awards. Open to UK SMEs, NHS & Third Sector, charitable organisations, local government bodies & research institutions. Proposals must create valuable, innovative tools to help treat people with opioid or cocaine addictions and aid in their recovery. The AMI Awards are a two-stage call inviting applications for projects up to 36 months in duration, with no upper funding limit. Sign up to the Q&A taking place 1pm on 28th June 2023. Application deadline is 12th July 2023.

UK firms championing inclusive innovation awarded £2.5 million

Innovate UK is helping 50 companies to develop inclusive innovations, from smart gloves that translate sign language to digital assistants for people with dementia. Fifty pioneering companies across the UK have each been awarded £50,000 to further develop their inclusive innovations that include universally accessible electric vehicle chargers and curriculum-aligned mobile games that are revolutionising learning.

A Day in the life of the CAELUS Project Team

The second phase of Project CAELUS is well underway which will involve live flight trials and simulated drone network activity across the three regional innovation test beds in Scotland along with the Scottish Ambulance Service to trial what safely using drones at scale within Scotland’s airspace could look like.
