Funded through the Chief Scientist’s Office, Health Innovation South East Scotland (HISES) forms part of national network created to deliver the Scottish Government’s vision to utilise the innovation process to deliver a healthier and wealthier nation for the future.

Formed through a collaboration of three NHS Boards — Borders, Fife and Lothian, with the latter taking on the role of lead host Board, HISES has a pivotal role in delivering innovative solutions to the health and social challenges, both regionally and nationally. Need to contact us?

AGS Airports and NHS Scotland land funding from Innovate UK for medical drone project

A consortium led by AGS Airports in partnership with NHS Scotland to deliver what will be the UK’s first medical distribution network using drones has secured £10.1 million in funding from the Future Flight Challenge at UK Research and Innovation.

Through the NHS innovation test bed infrastructure and by taking a ‘Once for Scotland’ approach, we can determine the viability, scalability and efficiency of the technology, and its potential impact across the NHS.

Health Innovation South East Scotland are delighted to be part of this large-scale innovation project alongside the North and West of Scotland Innovation Hubs and Scottish Ambulance Service.

SBRI: Home glaucoma monitoring Phase 1

NHS Forth Valley, on behalf of the Eye Health Consortium, NHS Scotland and the Scottish Health and Industry Partnership (SHIP), Scottish Government are hosting the Home Glaucoma Monitoring Open Innovation Challenge.

The challenge is to develop and validate the tools needed for home (or near-patient) glaucoma assessment, including home tonometry and home assessment of visual function, and potentially even optic disc imaging.

SHIP is investing up to £210,000 inclusive of VAT across both phases of this competition.

Beyond Surgery: Robotic Assistance in The NHS Workplace

NHS Grampian Innovation Hub and the National Robotarium would like to invite potential industry partners to an exciting event exploring how we can use robotic technology to better carry out activities in NHS Scotland and beyond.

NHS Grampian are hosting a face-to-face event on Tuesday 23rd August 9am – 4pm at the Suttie Centre on their Foresterhill Health Campus.

This will provide industry with opportunities to hear directly from frontline NHS staff about the nature of their challenges, arrange site visits where that is helpful and network with the view to creating consortia.

Future Leaders Fellowships: Round 7

UK Research and Innovation are looking to fund fellowships of up to seven years to support talented researchers and innovators who are transitioning to research or innovation leadership.

This scheme is for early career researchers and innovators who are either looking to establish or transition to independence or develop their own original and ambitious plans within a commercial setting.

Outline proposals must be submitted by 18th October 2022, and full applications submitted by 6th December 2022.

Funded places available for University of Edinburgh Health Data Science course

This 10-credit online Masters course is being offered by the Usher Institute as part of The University of Edinburgh’s Data Upskilling Short Courses programme.

The course aims to equip healthcare professionals with the key foundations and data skills that are needed for data-driven innovation. It provides a gentle introduction to key concepts, principles, and methods of data science in health, enabling you to explore the potential for data to transform healthcare.

Funded places are available to those who meet Scottish Funding Council fee waiver criteria.

Applications close on 11th September 2022.

2022 Gilead Oncology Fellowship Programme – Applications Closing Soon!

Gilead UK and Ireland are now accepting applications for the 2022 Gilead Oncology Fellowship Programme.

The Fellowship Programme is a medical grants funding stream that funds innovative initiatives that improve patient care and outcomes across oncology services.

Priority will be given to those projects that include patients with breast cancer, though applicants are encouraged to submit projects for other types of solid tumour.

Applications are particularly welcome for any project that seeks to reduce inequalities in access to healthcare and outcomes.

Applications close on Saturday 30th July 2022.

Healthy Ageing Innovation Accelerator Competition

A new Healthy Ageing Innovation Accelerator Programme is being launched for the UK’s National Innovation Centre for Ageing (NICA) to find new product or service ideas that can support us to stay healthy, mobile, and connected as we age.

The Accelerator will provide advice and support for many aspects of business growth including raising investment, business strategy and inclusive design around healthy ageing – with a focus on the fast-growing market in China and the potential commercial opportunities for British products and services.

MDMC Webinar - "What is a Medical Device?"

The Medical Device Manufacturing Centre (MDMC), InnoScot Health and Syntacog are pleased to announce this online event on 22nd September 2022 at 10am.

Join the combined technical seminar explaining the definition of a medical device, its classification, and related regulations.

This webinar will be of interest to manufacturers with little prior knowledge and experience of medical devices, as well as established businesses seeking more information on the automation of classification of medical devices.

Veterans’ Health Innovation Fund – Open for bids

The Defence and Security Accelerator (DASA) is pleased to launch a new Themed Competition called the Veterans’ Health Innovation Fund.

Run on behalf of the Office for Veterans’ Affairs (Cabinet Office), this competition seeks cutting-edge technologies and innovations that improve the techniques and pathways for meeting veterans’ physical and mental health needs.

Outputs from this competition will improve UK capability to save and enhance lives through advancing technologies, interventions, and treatments in health.

This will enable better future commissioning of treatments. Up to £2.7 million funding available for innovative veterans’ healthcare technologies and solutions.

The deadline to submit a proposal is midday on 31st August 2022.

InnoScot Health works in partnership with NHS Scotland to identify, protect, develop, and commercialise new innovations from healthcare professionals.

A brand-new look for Scottish AI

The Scottish AI Alliance is tasked with the delivery of Scotland’s national AI Strategy and so are pivoting their branding to make the Scottish AI Alliance the umbrella brand for all their activities. And as the umbrella brand, its colours should represent this, so they’ve refreshed the logo to be in the colours of Scotland’s AI Strategy, the Scottish AI Playbook, and the Scottish AI Summit.
