‘Jack and Jill’ Ophthalmology Operating Theatres

An ophthalmology innovation is increasing capacity via the provision of an additional theatre running side-by-side the existing treatment area, creating a ‘Jack and Jill’ theatre enables a single surgeon to work simultaneously across two adjoining theatres.  This results in more Fife patients having cataract surgery closer to home, removing the previous need for some to travel to Glasgow for treatment.   The new arrangement creates additional capacity for with scope to increase as demand rises, improving performance by reducing waiting times and with the potential to provide additional capacity for neighbouring health boards. The Jack and Jill model is already used successfully in other parts of the UK and the new arrangement should allow for another 500 cases per year.
