Improving Hip Fracture Outcomes Using Data: Clinical Engagement Event

On Monday, 3rd March 2025, we had the pleasure of hosting an engaging and insightful event at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, marking a significant step forward in Phase 2 of our Hip Fracture SBRI project. This session was a key opportunity for clinical engagement and feedback on the innovative solution being developed by Red Star.

The session was open to all orthopaedic staff members and provided the opportunity for live demonstration, Q&A and focused 1:1 drop-in sessions with our industry partner.

The Red Star project aims to develop a working data visualisation and analysis dashboard that is interoperable with existing clinical IT systems to increase efficiency of clinical team communication and workflow. Red Star have undertaken analysis with doctors, nurses, surgeons, geriatricians, physiotherapists, and other multidisciplinary teams to understand what they need from a clinical system to help them care for patients.

Their prototype solution leverages digital tools to ensure a more seamless transition from hospital care to community or home settings. By focusing on real-time data, communication enhancements, and proactive task planning, Red Star aims to empower medical teams with the necessary, easy to use tools to prevent unnecessary delays.

The event provided a collaborative space where clinicians, nursing leads, and administrative teams could engage directly with the application.

Key highlights included:

  • Hands-on Demonstrations: Attendees had the chance to interact with the application, exploring its features and usability in real-world hospital settings.
  • Feedback Sessions: Open discussions allowed participants to share their insights, challenges, and suggestions for improvement, ensuring the solution is tailored to the practical needs of healthcare teams.
  • Collaborative Problem-Solving: By bringing together frontline staff and digital innovators, the session fostered dynamic discussions on overcoming key discharge-related barriers.

Why This Matters

Hip fracture patients tend to be older and may have multiple and complex health issues resulting in complex clinical challenges to understand the entire patient picture. The success of any digital transformation in healthcare hinges on engagement from those who will use the technology daily. By involving clinical staff early in the process, we ensure that Red Star’s solution is not only technologically robust but also practical, intuitive, and aligned with the real demands of hospital workflows.

Looking Ahead

With the valuable insights gathered from the event, Red Star will refine their prototype, incorporating the feedback to enhance functionality and user experience. Phase 2 is an exciting period of iteration and development, and we are committed to supporting this journey to deliver impactful change within our healthcare system.

We extend our gratitude to everyone who participated in the event as it is pivotal in shaping a solution that has the potential to make a real difference for patients on the hip fracture pathway.

This is a Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI) competition funded by the Chief Scientists Office (CSO) in Scottish Government and hosted by the South East of Scotland Innovation Hub.

Stay tuned for further updates as we continue to drive innovation and improve patient care through digital transformation!
