Funded through the Chief Scientist’s Office, Health Innovation South East Scotland (HISES) forms part of national network created to deliver the Scottish Government’s vision to utilise the innovation process to deliver a healthier and wealthier nation for the future.

Formed through a collaboration of three NHS Boards — Borders, Fife and Lothian, with the latter taking on the role of lead host Board, HISES has a pivotal role in delivering innovative solutions to the health and social challenges, both regionally and nationally. Need to contact us?

HISES appoint 3 Innovation Fellows as part of the NHS Scotland Fellowship programme

Cohort 1 of the Innovation Fellowship Scheme launched in May 2022. The aim of the Scheme is to strengthen the innovation culture to solve real problems in the NHS and social care.

Up to 3 places per Regional Test Bed were available and following a thorough and highly competitive application process, HISES are excited to announce the appointment of the first 3 Innovation Fellows within the South East region!

Dr Yvonne Chun, Consultant Stroke Physician at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and Border General Hospital, Dr Rishi Ramaesh, Consultant Radiologist in NHS Lothian & NHS Fife, and Joyce Henderson, Lead Advanced Physiotherapy Practitioner, Paediatric Orthopaedics at Victoria Hospital in NHS Fife join our growing team!

SBRI: Mental Health Innovation Challenge – Closing soon!

The aim of this competition is to develop disruptive innovative solutions that deliver sustainable, accessible, and equitable mental health services, addressing young people, hard to reach populations, patient centred care pathways, treatment resistant conditions, or prioritisation of backlog.

Registration opened on 22nd June 2022, and we’d like to thank all applicants who have engaged with HISES to see how your proposals may potentially fit with our regional test bed priority area.

Applications close at 11am on Wednesday 17th August.

DataLoch Full Launch

DataLoch – a data service designed in partnership by the University of Edinburgh and NHS Lothian – has fully launched. From this point, researchers from any organisation can apply for access to extracts of the health and social care data within the DataLoch repository.

Further details about the main launch features – including the data hosted by DataLoch, how they have extended support for researchers, designing a new Public Value Assessment process, and the learning from recent public consultation exercises – can be found on the DataLoch website.

Innovating Healthcare Scotland with Humza Yousaf MSP

A roundtable event will take place on Wednesday 7th September at Dynamic Earth to discuss healthcare innovation in Scotland in advance of a panel discussion open to the public. There is no shortage of ambition and the vision for 2025 is well known, yet the challenge for policymakers is knowing how to implement these recommendations to best effect.

As Cabinet Secretary of Health and Social Care, Humza Yousaf MSP will provide insightful ideas alongside thought leaders from industry, NHS Scotland, patient groups and others.

SBRI: Home Glaucoma Monitoring Phase 1

NHS Forth Valley, on behalf of the Eye Health Consortium, NHS Scotland and the Scottish Health and Industry Partnership (SHIP), Scottish Government are hosting the Home Glaucoma Monitoring Open Innovation Challenge. The challenge is to develop and validate the tools needed for home (or near-patient) glaucoma assessment, including home tonometry and home assessment of visual function, and potentially even optic disc imaging.

SHIP is investing up to £210,000 inclusive of VAT across both phases of this competition. An online briefing event will take place 1.30 – 3pm on 24th August, register here.

The competition closes at 12pm on 21st September 2022.

Women in Innovation Awards 2022/23

Innovate UK, as part of UK Research and Innovation, is offering up to 50 Women in Innovation Awards to women entrepreneurs across the UK. The aim of this competition is to find women with exciting, innovative ideas and ambitious plans that will inspire others. The awards are for women founders, co-founders or senior decision makers working in businesses that have been operating for at least one year.

The winners will receive a £50,000 grant and a bespoke package of mentoring, coaching and business support. Innovate UK KTN is hosting an online briefing event on 18th August from 10am to 12:30pm.

InnoScot Health launches joint Innovation Opportunity with CivTech and NHS Scotland

NHS Staff at one of Scotland’s hospitals have developed a domiciliary care pathway for the safe and effective management of patients with primary and secondary spontaneous pneumothoraxes (air leak from the lungs causing the lungs to collapse).

The hospital team, working in partnership with InnoScot Health, seek a device that is light and wearable / portable. Scottish Government, NHS Scotland, InnoScot Health and CivTech are keen to speak to businesses interested in potentially entering a commercial partnership which may include further co-development of the product/service leading to its wider commercial release.

Medical Device and Medical App Regulations event

Are you developing a medical app or software – AI, analytical algorithms, clinical prediction tools or consumer apps? The University of Edinburgh and Edinburgh Innovations are running a face-to-face session from 1.30 – 2.30pm on 7th September at QMRI. Whether you are working in medical technologies, devices, or apps this event is for you.

You will learn how to identify which regulations are applicable to your product, plan your development strategy, and write more effective regulation-conscious funding applications.

BioForward 2022 is OBN’s Roadmap for Growth Life Sciences event taking place in Oxford on Tuesday 27th September 2022. The one-day event is designed to provide the support, skills, know-how and industry connections required to build a commercially successful business, and they are pleased to offer complimentary registration to early stage & emerging life sciences R&D companies, to allow them to meet with a broad range of vital support service providers from across the life sciences ecosystem.

Beyond Surgery: Robotic Assistance in The NHS Workplace

NHS Grampian Innovation Hub and the National Robotarium would like to invite potential industry partners to an exciting event exploring how we can use robotic technology to better carry out activities in NHS Scotland and beyond. NHS Grampian are hosting a face-to-face event on Tuesday 23rd August 9am – 4pm at the Suttie Centre on their Foresterhill Health Campus. This will provide industry with opportunities to hear directly from frontline NHS staff about the nature of their challenges, arrange site visits where that is helpful and network with the view to creating consortia.

Indoor Air Management of Airborne Pathogens Lessons, Practices, Innovations by Environmental Health Matters Initiative

The pandemic made indoor air quality management an urgent issue for many. This free workshop taking place Thursday 18th August 202 from 4.30pm – 8.30pm, will explore progress made on managing indoor air since 2020 as well as barriers to implementation. Ewan Eadie, Head of Scientific Services for Photobiology and Optical Radiation, Dermatology, NHS Tayside and Project Lead in NHS Tayside’s HaarSain PPE/Decontamination Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI) is giving a 10-minute talk on FarUVC.  Some household names in building ventilation/disease control are organising and presenting the event.

Veterans’ Health Innovation Fund – Closing Soon!

The Defence and Security Accelerator (DASA) is has launched a new Themed Competition called the Veterans’ Health Innovation Fund. Run on behalf of the Office for Veterans’ Affairs (Cabinet Office), this competition seeks cutting-edge technologies and innovations that improve the techniques and pathways for meeting veterans’ physical and mental health needs. Outputs from this competition will improve UK capability to save and enhance lives through advancing technologies, interventions, and treatments in health. This will enable better future commissioning of treatments. Up to £2.7 million funding available for innovative veterans’ healthcare technologies and solutions.

The deadline to submit a proposal is midday on 31st August 2022.

This year’s Event took place in Aberdeen on Tuesday 21 and Wednesday 22 June at the P&J Live. Delegates, speakers, and exhibitors travelled from all over the country to come together for the first in-person Event since 2019. Apply now for an Advanced Innovation Voucher!

The Advanced Innovation Voucher is aimed at building sustained relationships between SMEs and universities (HEI) or Further Education Colleges (FEC) in Scotland who may have previously collaborated together or for those companies who are beginning their collaborative journey with a HEI / FEC partner. This programme will draw on several funders including Scottish Funding Council, Highlands & Islands Enterprise, and Scottish Enterprise. This Voucher offers a matched grant of up to £20,000 on a sliding scale basis with a minimum cash contribution required from the company.

Deadline for applications: Wednesday 31st August at 5pm.

DHI MSc Funding 2022-23 Application Round 2

DHI have 7.5 FTE Master’s scholarships in digital health and care available for application in our second round of applications for 2022-23 intake! The deadline for the second round of applications for 2022-23 funding intake is 31st August 2022. The scholarships are at £7,387 each and provided on a fee-waiver basis only.
