Welcoming Nazir Lone as HISES Clinical Innovation Lead
Nazir Lone, Professor of Critical Care and Epidemiology at the Usher Institute, has been appointed Clinical Innovation Lead for Health Innovation South East Scotland (HISES), strengthening the organisation’s commitment to accelerating the development, evaluation and adoption of innovations that improve patient care and health outcomes across South East Scotland.
Nazir is also an Honorary Consultant in Critical Care at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, NHS Lothian. His research focuses on improving the quality and outcomes of acute and critically ill people through epidemiology, data science and healthcare innovation, with a particular interest in using routinely collected healthcare data to support safer, more effective care and service improvement.
Alongside his clinical and academic roles, Nazir serves as Director of Research for the Intensive Care Society and previously chaired the Scottish Intensive Care Society Audit Group at Public Health Scotland, where he led national quality improvement programmes using routinely collected data to improve care across Scotland.
In his new role with HISES, Nazir will work closely with clinicians, academia, industry, health and social care partners, and the third sector to identify important challenges, rigorously evaluate emerging innovations and accelerate the adoption of solutions that deliver measurable benefits for patients and services.

Nazir’s appointment comes at a time of growing focus on evidence-based innovation within the NHS. His experience in clinical research, healthcare data science and quality improvement programmes will support HISES in identifying high-potential innovations, generating robust evidence of impact and helping bring effective solutions into routine practice across the region.
