Acting on Intelligence – AI Skin Cancer Consortium

There is a pressing need to speed up the diagnosis of skin cancer, improving treatment and care. 25 by 25 is an NHS-led Consortium by NHS Forth Valley and is supported by the Chief Scientists Office in Scottish Government, the DHI, the Data Lab, iCAIRD and partners.

The project aims to integrate AI into the care pathway to diagnose skin cancer in 25 minutes by 2025. The latest innovation article “Acting on Intelligence” featured in the October edition of Holyrood Magazine tells us more about this AI Skin Cancer Consortium.

Scottish Health Technologies Group launches new website

The Scottish Health Technologies Group (SHTG), part of Healthcare Improvement Scotland, is excited to announce the launch of its new website, making it easier for people to request SHTG support, view SHTG published advice, and learn more about how their work contributes to decision making across health and care.

Launch of early HTA Advice Service by the SHTG

SHTG provides advice to NHSScotland on health technologies and is excited to announce the piloting of a new service – ‘Early Health Technology Assessment (HTA) Advice’.

This service will help medical technology developers prepare for HTA – the process of establishing value of a technology to NHSScotland – using the Medtech Early Technical Assessment (META) Tool developed by NICE.

The service is due to launch in November 2021. During the initial phase, the META tool will be offered free of charge to developers. Please email his.shtg@nhs.scot to register an interest in receiving our early HTA advice.

SHIL Frailty Innovation Call closing soon!

The SHIL innovation call focussed on frailty, is open until 22nd October 2021. It is seeking innovative ideas from health and social care professionals that can help transform the quality of people’s lives, while helping NHS Scotland adapt to the changing demographic and increase in service use as people become frailer.

Information on the support available was shared at a briefing event this month including talks from the SHIL Innovation team, plus guest speaker’s Dr Susan Shenkin and Dr Rodney Mountain. The event recording is available to watch now.

Understanding Medical Device Regulation: An Introduction for Innovators webinar

SHIL have teamed up with the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde’s Medical Devices Unit to host an upcoming webinar. Understanding medical device regulation: an introduction for innovators, will take place from 9.30 am – 12 pm on 25th November. The webinar is open to Scottish-based SMEs, researchers and NHS employees involved in healthcare device innovation

West of Scotland Innovation Hub job opportunities

Want to use your innovation skills to work on some exciting developments in medicine? The West of Scotland Innovation Hub are looking for two Innovation Clinical Theme Leads to join their growing team on a fixed-term basis. They are seeking enthusiastic and dynamic individuals to lead the development of innovations to specifically address current Mental Health and Cancer challenges, in partnership with industry, higher education institutions, and the third sector. Health Technology Assessment of New Medical Technologies webinar

Health Technology Assessment (HTA) is a formal process to establish the clinical and cost-effectiveness of new medical technologies for the NHS: does the technology work, for whom, at what cost, how does it compare with alternatives?

NHS Clinical Entrepreneur Programme (NHS CEP) is now open!

This ground-breaking programme welcomes applications from a diverse range of Scottish healthcare professionals and is helping bring innovations into the NHS to improve patient care. Launched in 2016 the NHS CEP, delivered by Anglia Ruskin University, is the biggest entrepreneurial workforce development programme of its kind as it aims to provide the commercial skills, knowledge and experience needed to successfully develop and spread innovative solutions to the challenges facing the NHS. To make the opportunity even more appealing, any successful Scottish applications will be supported by the DHI and Scottish Enterprise.

NRS Career Research Fellowships

The next round of the NRS Career Researcher Fellowships is now open for applications and will close on Wednesday 17th November 2021. The aim of this scheme is to support General Practitioners and NHS-funded clinical staff in developing a research career within their post. This includes – qualified doctors, nurses, AHPs, pharmacists, biomedical/clinical scientists, public health specialists and psychologists. The award provides funding for protected time to contribute to, conduct and lead clinical research to strengthen the research culture in the NHS.
