Funded through the Chief Scientist’s Office, Health Innovation South East Scotland (HISES) forms part of
national network created to deliver the Scottish Government’s vision to utilise the innovation process to
deliver a healthier and wealthier nation for the future.

Formed through a collaboration of three NHS Boards — Borders, Fife and Lothian, with the latter taking
on the role of lead host Board, HISES has a pivotal role in delivering innovative solutions to the health and

Infection Management Game shortlisted for Nursing
Times Award

 

The Infection Management Game, invented by NHS Lothian Critical Care Infection Surveillance Nurse, Odette Brooks, and supported to development by SHIL, has been shortlisted for a Nursing Times Award in the Infection Prevention and Control category. The awards highlight excellence in a wide range of nursing specialities. The Infection Management Game is an exemplar of front-line health professionals identifying new, more efficient ways to improve service delivery and patient care, enabling the effective management of patients with suspected or known infections.

Holyrood Magazine – Science and Innovation feature

“The pandemic has done nothing to slow the appetite for innovation.” – COVID19 is a significant challenge but some reassuring content in the Science and Innovation issue of Holyrood Magazine showing positive work taking place across Scotland to respond and adapt. Having the innovation test bed model in place ahead of COVID19 has been vital in enabling the NHS to adapt and respond to the pandemic and embrace new ways of working.

Professor Frances Quirk is the newly appointed Assistant Research and Development Director at NHS Fife

Professor Frances Quirk has recently joined NHS Fife as Assistant RD&I Director. Frances has been working remotely from Australia since August and arrived in Fife at the beginning of November. Frances has demonstrated a commitment to improving quality and equity of access to care for rural, regional and remote communities through innovation and translation and is looking forward to working closely with colleagues at HISES to support innovation across Fife and South East Scotland.

Innovation Test Beds in Scotland for Health and Social Care

The Innovation Test Beds in Scotland bring together industry, academia and healthcare services to improve NHS and Social Care services in Scotland. Together they look for innovations that will enact positive changes in citizens’ health outcomes and general wellbeing. Having a national network of innovation test beds allows innovative solutions to be tested to ensure they are fit for use in NHS– clinically, financially and operationally.

A new Twitter account for Health and Social Care Innovation Scotland has been setup to support and promote innovation across Health and Social Care in Scotland, made possible through strong collaboration of industry, academia and NHS. Follow @HSCInnoScot to keep up to date.

Scotland’s AI Strategy

The Scottish Government is committed to developing an AI strategy for Scotland, which is due to be published in spring 2021. January 2020 saw the publication of a scoping document setting out proposals for the strategy. Latest blog post now live which reflects on the consultation process conducted earlier this year and summarises the Consultation Report.
